WHAT TO VISIT.
Nizza Monferrato, UNESCO site “The wine-growing landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato” the ideal center from which to depart for excursions by car or bicycle, to nature trails scattered all around the city and in neighboring villages, or to go to the wineries of producers to taste the wonderful wines produced on these hills. Nice is also dotted with clubs, typical restaurants and taverns in which to taste typical Piedmontese dishes. It also offers nice stores for shopping. On rainy days, you can pop into nearby Asti to visit Palazzo Mazzetti, Asti’s Pinacoteca Civica, Asti’s iconic Troyana Tower, or the Paleontological Museum, which houses fossilized skeletons of Asti’s cetaceans! Also in September is the famous Palio di Asti in which Nizza Monferrato also participates.
Nizza Monferrato is recognized worldwide as the capital of Barbera wine. From the prized grape variety, the Barbera d’Asti superiore ” Nizza ” appellation was born on July 1, 2016. An opportunity to taste Nizza and other Piedmontese types of Barbera is during the Nizza is Barbera festival in May. Nice is also the land par excellence of hunchback thistle and white truffle, specialties that can be sampled during the St. Charles Patronal Fair-Truffle and Hunchback Thistle Day in November.
It also cannot be forgotten that Nice is home to the prized Piedmontese beef, celebrated during the Fat Ox and Beef Fair .
Typical dishes include: green cake, which can be enjoyed during the Fair of the Holy Christ in April; belacauda (chickpea porridge); and bagna cauda, which features in two popular events: the Camperista’s Bagna Cauda and Nice is Bagna Cauda.
The territory of Nizza Monferrato is distinguished by the large number of monuments of considerable value. A visit to the town’s symbol, the Campanon, a civic tower incorporated into the town hall, cannot be missed.
Historic buildings also include. Crova di Vaglio Palace, Palace of Taste and De Benedetti Palace. Equally interesting are the church properties: don’t miss the Church of Our Lady of the Snow (Bricco), the Church of St. John the Baptist in Lanero, considered the Cathedral of Nizza Monferrato, the Church of St. Siro and the Church of St. Hippolytus. Also stimulating are the museum proposals with the Bersano Museum of Farming and Antique Wine Prints , Sug@r(T)_house, the museum dedicated to sugar created by the Figli di Pinin Pero & C. company, and the permanent exhibition Art’900, a collection of Davide Lajolo ‘s artwork. A stop on the tourist itinerary should also be reserved for the Jewish Cemetery and the Garden of the Righteous (unique in lower Piedmont). Photography lovers are advised to stop by the Artist’s Wings, artistic canvases depicted large angel wings posted on the outside walls of the gardens of Palazzo Crova.
